Delhi forms an important base to explore the north as well as other parts in and out of India. However, if you aren't in the mood to drive too far or to take a flight, the NCR region has a number of getaway resorts for you to unwind and relax over the weekend. We've also put together a list of places that are accessible from Delhi either by drive or flight.  

Places you can drive to from Delhi

Upto a 4 hour drive:

  • Alwar-Located just around 160kms from Delhi and surrounded by the Aravalli Hills, Alwar is home to the Sariska Tiger Reserve, the ancient historical town of Neemrana and a number of museums and temples which add heritage to Rajasthan. 
  • Bharatpur-Home to Keoladeo National Park and the Lohagarh Fort, Bharatpur is rich with culture.  
  • Agra-Visit Agra to see some Mughal-style architecture including the world-famous Taj Mahal. 
  • Mathura-Only around 160 km away is this heritage city which is known to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna (Vrindavan). 
  • Kurukshetra-If the sound of tons of religious and historical sites excites you, take a trip to Kurukshetra, just two and a half hours away. 

4-7 hour drive: 

  • Jaipur- Drive down to Rajasthan's capital 'Pink City' in less than 6 hours.  
  • Ajmer -Rajasthan's most important site in terms of Islamic history and heritage. About 15kms from Ajmer, you can get lost in the sounds of drums, gongs, chanting and devotional songs that echo in the streets of Pushkar
  • Nainital - A good option if you want to sit back and relax in the pleasant weather, surrounded by lakes and hills. Nearby Bhimtal and Mukteshwar are also popular with tourists. 
  • Shimla- Hike, camp, ski and go mountain biking with a view of the surrounding snow-capped peaks and green hills. 
  • Rishikesh - Located at the foothills of the Himalayas, the 'Yoga Capital of the World' is known for its ashrams and is also a center for white water rafting, hiking and other adventure activities. 
  • Kasauli - Camp and trek through the lush green forests and visit the Monkey Point for a breathtaking view of the river Sutlej. Kasauli is also a birdwatcher's paradise. 
  • Dehradun district - Getaway to Dehradun or Mussoorie for a relaxed weekend amongst its picturesque landscapes and milder weather.  
  • For wildlife lovers, Ranthambore National Park and Jim Corbett National Park are both within 7 hours from Delhi. Known for their large tiger population, the latter is home to the endangered Bengal Tiger population. 
  • Lansdowne - Surrounded by thick oak and blue pine forests, this quiet and unspoilt hill station is unique as it is well connected with motorable roads, yet remote and cozy in its own way.  
  • Haridwar- Regarded as one of the holiest places for Hindus, Haridwar is a must visit for devout Hindus all around the world. 
  • Amritsar- Known for the Golden Temple and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, one can also experience heights of patriotism at the Wagah Border which is just about 28km from here.  

7-10 hour drive: 

  • Dharamshala- Dharamshala is known as the home of the Dalai Lama, but it is actually further uphill, in the town of McLeod Ganj (also known as Upper Dharamshala), where the actual residence is. The Tibetan government-in-exile is also based in Gangchen Kyishong. You can take courses in Buddhism, meditation or yoga, trek in the beautiful Dhauladhar mountains, or just chill and enjoy the spiritual vibe. 
  • Kullu-Known for its temples and majestic hills covered with deodar and pine forests, trekking and white water rafting options are also available at Kullu.

  • Kasol-With its rustic cafes and guesthouses, Kasol receives a lot of Israeli tourists and is the perfect place if you just want to hang-out at one of these cafes and enjoy the nature around you or maybe even trek. Nearby Malana and Tosh are also popular with tourists.  
  • Khajuraho-Temples, temples, temples! Visit Khajuraho to marvel at some unique architecture. It is also one of the UNESCO world heritage sites.

  • Andaman & Lakshadweep-These two destinations are not only known for their pristine beaches but are also ideal for scuba diving, water skiing, snorkeling and many other outdoor activities. If you're looking for something secluded and out of this world, Andaman and Lakshadweep are not far from Delhi by flight. However, you'll need to spend a few days to enjoy these places to the fullest.
