FAQs

How do I get to Bandipur?

By car: Bandipur is 230 km from Bangalore, a drive of about 5 hours and can be reached by the State Highway 75 (to be upgraded to NH 275) which connects Bangalore to Mysore, from where the reserve is just 80 km away on the Mysore-Ooty highway. An alternative route is taking the road from Kanakpura, Kollegal, Chamarajanagar and Gundlupet. The nearest town is Gundlupet which is just 31 km away. If you are approaching from Coimbatore (135 km), the route most often traversed is the Mettupalayam-Ooty-Masinagudi stretch which is by far the most picturesque, filled with steep hilly Nilgiri curves and scenic green valleys.
By bus: KSRTC (government buses) can be taken from Mysore bus stand as they operate on a daily basis to Bandipur, via Nanjangud and Gundlupet. So, if you're planning to travel from Bangalore, first take a bus to Mysore (you'll have plenty of buses from Satellite Bus Stand, or you can book a private bus) and then head to Bandipur from Mysore. Buses also operate from major cities like Coimbatore every other day but the timings are sometimes uncertain, so make sure to do your research in advance.
By train: The nearest functional railway station is in Nanjangud - 55 km away. The nearest major railway junction is in Mysore, 80 km away. Coimbatore is another major junction present 140 km to the south of Bandipur.
By air: The Bangalore International Airport is the nearest major airport (265 km) from the national park. From here, state run buses can be boarded or you can hire a taxi to Bandipur.

Best time to visit?

You can visit Bandipur National Park anytime of the year, since the flora and fauna never cease to beautify the surroundings of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that fascinates thousands of tourists that visit this place annually. The best time to pay a visit would be during the winter months from November-February which are perfect for going on a safari or sightseeing. Although March-June months are hot, it should not put you off your plans as the wildlife resuscitates during these summer months. Torrential rainfalls are experienced during the rainy months from June to September and the region is at its breathtaking best with lush foliages and verdant greenery.

How do I get around in Bandipur?

Bus and jeep safaris are quite common in the forest area around the active buffer zones and they operate daily. Bus safaris only operate from 6:30 to 9:30 A.M and only after 3:30 P.M until sunset. The NH-67 & 212 pass through the reserve and private vehicles are allowed upto some stretches. There is a traffic ban from 9PM to 6AM so as to avoid and reduce wildlife deaths and confrontations. Trekking and hiking in the jungle is deemed illegal and has been banned. Camping is allowed but only with the permission of the forest authorities and the range officer.

What are the main attractions here?

The National Park is the natural habitat of majestic Asian Elephants and magnificent tigers, which are the star attractions of this vast reserve. The wilderness area is home to the largest population of wild Elephants in South Asia. Patience is an extremely useful trait if you visit Bandipur because of the sporadic but remarkable sightings of wildlife. Other frequently seen animals such as gaurs, sloth bears, rock pythons, dholes, jackals, grey langurs, hawk eagles, etc. are some of the lot. The views from the highest peak in the park, Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta (1450 m), are a sight to behold. Also, the Moyar Gorge is a spectacle to be experienced.
