Bandipur National Park, established in 1974, which is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, has been marked as a world heritage site by UNESCO, and is a reserve under Project Tiger. It is home to a number of rare tree, bird, mammal and reptile species. It was once used as a private hunting reserve by the Maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore.
