Almost midway between San Francisco and LA, San Luis Obispo, though a low-key town, has
been named America's happiest city because of its high quality of life.
Head over to the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, and
Hearst Castle if you're beginning your tour of the historic SLO.
Every Thursday evening, Higuera Street is converted into the famous farmers' market (second
largest in western United States) where you will find the freshest produce, the hottest
barbeques and engaging entertainers. Also, just off Higuera Street, is Bubblegum Alley. If you've
got the stomach for strange things, this attraction features thousands of pieces of chewed gum
along a 70-foot- long alley wall!
For outdoor adventure seekers, San Luis Obispo has over 30 trails for hiking, a number of golf
courses, and places like Pismo Beach, Morro Bay and Montana de Oro State Park for the
surfers.
SLO is also home to some of the best mountain biking in the state. One can even
hike to the Point San Luis Lighthouse along breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.
If you're looking for a place less-known and less tourist-y, but with a lot of things to do,
SLO is the one!
