The Retreat at Bhimtal is a charming, family owned 19th-century colonial bungalow nestled among the Himalayan foothills of the Kumaon Lake District. Filled with old colonial furniture, cutlery and knick-knacks, the house breathes the atmosphere of old style comfort and peace. The Stay

Two double rooms with attached bathrooms - one with a spare room with two beds, the other with a spare room with one bed, are on offer. An extra bed can be added in the spare room. The spaces are airy and bright owing to the large windows, and various family memorabilia are displayed on certain walls.

Visit a village on the Estate with a village guide (and a family member, if desired) and have a pahari meal in a village home if you like.

Getting there

By road:

Delhi through Moradabad bypass, Rampur, Bilaspur, Rudrapur, Tanda Road, Haldwani-Kathgodam, to Bhimtal. Take the private dirt road (2km) 50m before the north end of the lake to reach The Retreat, at a distance about 300km; approximately a seven hours' drive. Lots of buses are available from Anand Vihar, including AC and Volvo.

Nearest Airport: Pant Nagar, 58km

By rail:

Ranikhet Express at night, reaches Kathgodam (22km) early morning. A day train, Sampark Kranti, leaves in the morning reaches mind-day.
