Masterton is the largest town in the Wairarapa region. This historical town is adorned with art and history museums like The Wool Shed, Wairarapa Museum of Art and History and the National Museum of Sheep and Shearing and Aratoi. The Wool Shed is a marvelous little museum dedicated to NZ's sheep-shearing and wool-production industries. Masterton owes its fame to the annual Golden Shears shearing competition. This draws top shears from all over the country every March. If you enjoy forests, you can head to Tararua Forest Park. You'll see mountain streams dart through the forest. You can also head towards the hills and enjoy long walks or picnics. There are other towns around that you can visit too. Martinborough for the vineyards and wineries and Greytown for the history. You can also visit Putangirua Pinnacles, the filming location for The Lord of the Rings.
