Greymouth, the largest town in the West Coast region, is mostly famous for its history of gold mining, jade hunting and dramatic river floods. The name comes from the town's river mouth location which is along the banks of the Grey River. The town houses galleries and museums that showcase its art and history. Shantytown, located just 10 kms south of Greymouth, is one of NZ's premier cultural and heritage attractions that gives you a real sense of what living in NZ is like. The town has many scenic walkways along the river and parks and so hiking is a popular activity. You can also go kayaking and enjoy solitude amidst the pristine landscapes.
