Description
Waste no time in starting your Penang food tour, as you head for breakfast to one of the oldest traditional Malaysian Chinese coffee shops, known as kopitiam. Dating back to 1940, your first taste of the day is a Malay breakfast of nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk) with chili paste and a boiled egg. You?ll also get to try prawn fritters and lobak, a five-spiced deep-fried pork roll that?s a delicacy in Nonya cuisine.
Next, dig into unusual fruits like rambutan, mangosteen, dukong and, if you?re daring enough, the king of Malaysian fruit: durian, at one of the oldest markets in Penang. As you continue your food tour, don't miss the historical streets with preserved heritage buildings and hidden back lanes, along the way.
For those of you who may not be aware, Penang showcases some of the best street food of Malay, Chinese, and Indian flavours. From assamlaksa (rice noodles in sour fish soup), to char kuey teow (fried flat rice noodles), and murtabak (an Indian Muslim bread with meat fillings) in Penang?s oldest Indian Muslim restaurant, dating back to 1907, you can truly say you've tried all the food there is, in Penang.
Oh and if you're wondering what's for dessert, a cool bowl of cendol (a serving of ice shavings with green doughy strips and red beans covered with coconut milk), should do the trick. End your tour by sipping on local drinks such as hot tehtarik, (pulled tea), lime juice with sour plum, nutmeg juice, and much more.

Penang Island
Penang is an island of great historical significance to Malaysia. Penang was earlier a settlement for the British East India Company in the late 1700s. The island struggled with post-colonial growth and development. A quirky fusion of the East and West, Penang today welcomes modernity, while retaining its traditions and old world charm. These are reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings, which led to George Town being listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site recently. The island today, is not just a tourist paradise, but also a centre of economical, industrial and technological developments. This is largely because of the great cultural diversity the Chinese and other South East Asian immigrants brought about. Being regarded as the food capital of Malaysia, Penang also spell-binds foodies with its beautiful coasts and scrumptious cuisines.
