Formed about 2 million years ago, Lake Tahoe is the largest freshwater, alpine lake in North
America at an elevation of 6,225 ft (1,897 m). Located in the Sierra Nevada of the United
States, it is the second deepest lake in the United States and the sixth largest by volume.
Known for its clear, cobalt-blue water and the beautiful view of the surrounding peaks, Lake
Tahoe is located on the California-Nevada border and is a major tourist attraction in both the
states. One can find many ski slopes, golf courses and casinos (on the Nevada side).
One can engage in a lot of water sports and beach activities during late Spring to early Fall.
Not to miss, the primary activity in summer- boating! One of the most prestigious wooden
boat shows in the country, The Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance, is held here every
August; so if you're travelling during this time you must catch this event along with several
others such as sailboat racing, fireworks over the lake, guided cruises, and
more!
Apart from boating and skiing, scuba diving is also popular in Lake Tahoe.
There are also quite a few hiking and mountain biking trails around the lake that one can
explore.
The lake is also home to Squaw Valley Ski Resort, one of the largest ski areas in the United
States, and the host site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. So, if you're a fan of skiing, throw on
some warm clothes and get down there any time of the year!
