This 'temple town' in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu dates back to the ancient Sangam period. Apart from its picturesque location between two rivers and, of course, the number of temples, Kumbakonam is also known for its Mahamaham festival which is celebrated every 12 years.
Referred to as the 'Cambridge of South India' the town is famous for its educational institutions as well as brass vessels.
