Edakkal Caves
The name ?Edakkal? literally means ?a stone in between?, and this describes how
the cave is formed by a heavy boulder straddling a fissure in the rock. Inside
the cave is on two levels, the lower chamber measures about 18 feet long by 12
feet wide and 10 feet high and can be entered through an opening of 5 x 4 feet.
A passage opposite the entrance leads upward to a small aperture in the roof
through which one climbs up to the next storey whose interior is about 96 feet
long, 22 feet wide, and 18 feet high.
Karapuzha Dam
One of the biggest Earth Dams in the country, the Karapuzha Dam's reservoir with partially submerged hills & lush green islands is an ideal breeding ground for aquatic birds. The backdrop of the gushing water from the dam against the verdant mountains makes for a picturesque spot. Muthanga wild life scantuary
On the way from Mysore to Sultan Battery. A variety of large wild animals such as Indian Bison, elephant, deer and tiger are found there along with a few unusual birds in the sanctuary. In particular, Peafowl tend to be very common in the area.Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. It is bestowed with lush green forests and rich wildlife. Also known as the 'Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary', this wildlife area houses some of the rare and endangered species of both flora and fauna.
Soojipara
A drive from Meppadi to the foothill of the peak is breathtaking and you can feel the cool wind and the lush greenery of tea estates on both sides of the road rejuvenating your spirits. You can see a three-storied forest watch tower on the foothill of the peak and a three kilometre trek from the foothill. A heart-shaped crystal perennial lake fed by natural springs can be seen at the middle of your journey. Even if it is scorching summer, the lake brims with water and helps you quench your thirst.
Meenmutty Waterfalls
Meenmutty falls is among the best and gorgeous falls in Wayanad Kalpetta. Wayanad comprises of some of the beautiful falls in Kerala. The must visit falls in Wayanad are the Meenmutty Falls, the Kanthampuram Falls, and the Suchipara Falls. Meenmutty falls is 29 kilometre far from the Wayanad Kalpetta. Meenmutty fall is a 300 metre high fall and is three-tiered. Meenmutty fall, the biggest and magnificent falls in Wayanad is situated at two kilometre hike through the forest from the Ooty road.
Banasura Sagar Dam
Banasura Sagar Dam consisting of a dam and a canal began operating as part of the Indian Banasura Sagar Project. Situated about 15 km from Kalpetta, the dam holds a large expanse of water and its picturesque beauty is enhanced by the chain of mountains seen on the backdrop. It is constructed in the Banasura Lake and the nearby mountains are known as Banasura Hills. Legends say that the Asura king of Banasura, (the son of King Mahabali, who is believed to visit Kerala during every Onam festival) undertook a severe penance on the top of these hills and thus it was named after him.
Kuruva Island
Kuruva Island is a beautiful tourist spot located in the heavenly Wayanad. Situated in the Kabana River tributary, you are astounded by the calm and gorgeous ambience prevailing in the place. The vast stretch of evergreen forests in the surroundings present a great getaway. Kuruva Island is separated from other spots but houses a, number of rare birds, orchids and herbs. Kuruva Island is at a distance of seventeen kilometers from Mananthavady.
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary or Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary in Wayanad, Kerala, has a wide variety of animals. Visitors are restricted to the outer tourist zone. The sanctuary is located 20 km east of Mananthavady, 13 km from Thirunelly on the Kodagu Road. Wayanad wild life sanctuary Tholpetty is a brilliant trekking spot . The types of deers seen here are red deer and spotted deer. You can also view wild boar, peacocks and peahens. Visiting hours: 0600 - 0800 hrs & 1500 - 1730 hrs
Thirunelly temple
The history of Thirunelly temple dates back to 3000 years and the temple has granite columns to protect it. There is stream by the name Papanashini nearby Thirunelly temple. An aqueduct from the Papanashini stream provides water for temple usage. Another notable thing about this temple is the Panchatheertha pond located near it. Five rivers used to meet in this Panchatheertha pond in the past. Surrounded by dense bushes in the centre of the pond there is a stone slab with the impression of Vishnu?s feet, which is referred to as Vishnu?s pad. Papanashini is considered to destroy the sins of pilgrims who take bath in it. Thirunelli temple in Wayanad is a must see for Hindu pilgrims visiting Kerala. It is open to all people without restrictions.
Pookot Lake
Pookot Lake is a picturesque location and a major tourist attraction in Wayanad. You will enjoy a day?s trip and camp in this location. The lake is surrounded by thick woods and trees. This peaceful, scenic spot is situated half way from Calicut. From Kalpetta you can reach Pookot Lake in half an hour. Surrounded by forests, and greenery, Pookot lake Wayanad is an enchanting location for nature lovers and photographers. But it is important to note that boating is not permitted here. Unfortunately some of the wilderness has been lost due to some commercial renovations in recent times.
Chembra peak
Chembra peak is situated near Meppady town and it is about 17 km from Kalpetta. It is the tallest peak in the region and a trek to the 6890 ft (2100 m above MSL ) peak is perfect for an adventure tourist.Prior permission from Forest Range Office at Meppadi is needed for the trek as it is part of the Meppadi Forest Range. A drive from Meppadi to the foothill of the peak is breathtaking and you can feel the cool wind and the lush greenery of tea estates on both sides of the road rejuvenating your spirits. You can see a three-storied forest watch tower on the foothill of the peak and a three kilometre trek from the foothill is exciting.
Kanthanpara Waterfalls
Kanthanpara Waterfalls is located twelve kilometers southeast of Wayanad Kalpetta. It is eight kilometers east of Meppadi. There are beautiful tea gardens on both sides of Kanthanpara waterfalls adding more beauty to the scenic waterfall. The overwhelming aroma of tea leaves and pattering of water on rocks makes this a perfect spot for a day-long trek. Surrounded by tea plants that enrich the mountain slopes, fresh cool air at the falls even carries the aroma of tea leaves. Water cascades down from a height of 30 metres in two steps. The natural pool at the upper level is safe to access during summer. During that period of predictable and stable water flow, even children can enjoy splashing in the pool.
