The charming small town of Freising is everything you wish for in a short getaway, only a half an hour drive northeast of Munich. Freising is constantly labeled as the oldest town in Bavaria owing to its 1,300-year-old history. Almost 500 years older than its famous metropolis counterpart, the tranquil town has been of much cultural significance in the region. The fantastic basilica of the Freising Cathedral overlooks the town with its twin romanesque spire towers and lovely mix of varied interior craftsmanship. It is also home to the oldest known operating brewery in the world - the Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, supposedly from 1040, although this claim is disputed.
