Wollongong is the closest heritage getaway from Sydney where you'll find the Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere. Your next stop could be Southern Highlands. Here you can visit the pretty towns Bowral and Berrima. While in Bowral you'll find the International Cricket Hall of Fame. In Berrima you'll find ancient churches and rectories, historic inns, an imposing stone court house, a prison and more! Another getaway which is a short drive away is the UNESCO World Heritage Area, Blue Mountains. Though it is mostly known for its enchanting scenery, there are many cultural attractions too. A must-visit would be the Megalong Australian Heritage Centre.
Then comes Canberra. You can either go on a slightly long drive or catch a flight to see Australia's history, architecturally symbolized in the form of many museums and galleries here. Then comes the Tweed-Coolangatta region. It is quite a long drive from Sydney and a slightly long flight but you get to see many World Heritage listed National Parks like Tropical Fruit & Research Park. A little further away is Gold Coast where you can visit the Lamington National Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Area.
