Darjeeling has derived its name from Dhor-je Ling, the Place of Vajra, an erstwhile Buddhist monastery situated at the Observatory established for the propagation of the mystic system of Vajrayana Buddhism. Very soon it turned into a heaven for tourists, sightseers, botanists, planters, mountaineers and trekkers. The most commanding view of the Divine Kanchenjunga seated on the throne of the dark blue forests, the lush green tea gardens down the valleys, the mellow red glow of the rising sun forming into different shapes and sizes cast a magic spell on the onlookers.
