Pune is the second largest town in Maharashtra after Mumbai. Aptly called "Oxford of the East", the majorly young population of this University town results in the liberal outlook and the vibrant nightlife of the city. Pune also has a 1600 year old history from its old settlements and different kingdoms that have taken over the city from the 5th century.
Other than the monuments, museums and temples, Pune also has a host of nature-based activities around the city. There is a Gliding Centre and Paragliding School & Flying Club, Water park, and Equestrian Centre on the outskirts. The outdoorsy type can go for bird-watching in the different parks of the city, or go for trekking around the Bhimshankar Wildlife sanctuary.
Its proximity to the hill-stations and other sight-seeing areas and connectivity by road and rail make it a convenient stop-over for many tourists.
