Overview
The Lion Safari Camp at Gir National Park Is a Luxury Wildlife Camp is owned and managed by Camps of India. It is located in a private mango orchard, overlooking the Hiran River. The location presently has around 900 Mango Trees with only 2% of the entire land area being built on so that the natural setting is maintained.

Gir National Park is the last remaining bastion of the Asiatic Lion. It also has the highest population of Leopards compared to any other national park in making it one of the best places in India to see the Big Cats. The Kamleshwar dam in the middle of the sanctuary is home to a record population of marsh crocodiles. Other wildlife includes Chital (spotted dear), Nilgai (blue bull), Wild boars, Jackals, Hyenas, etc. Gir National Park also has over 300 different varieties of birds.

The eco-friendly camp has 21 AC Luxury Tents each with large well furnished bedrooms and an attached en-suite bathrooms. All the tents are beautifully furnished with natural materials and open out to an extended deck - an ideal place to sit and relax amongst nature.

The open air restaurant overlooks the Hiran River. A choice of Indian, Chinese and Continental food is available. There is a barbeque in the evenings. They also bake their own breads and confectionery. Fresh seafood can be arranged on a days advance notice.

Don't forget to ask the chef for his special mango pickle and other dishes made from mango during the mango season. Picnic lunch or tea can also be arranged at the nearby scenic locations.

Whether there is a special occasion or you just feel like it, they can arrange a candlelight dinner for two at the camp.

Safaris
The Jungle Safaris are of highest quality and are accompanied by a naturalist in open 4/4 Custom-made 6 seat Gypsies with canvas tops which are exclusively used in their camps. The Lion safari offers a fair cross-section of habitats and wildlife of Gir.

Gir is the only place in the world outside Africa, where the Lion can be seen in its natural habitat. Due to the high density of lions, spotting is very good. Gir is also home to one of the largest Leopard populations in any park in India, making it an excellent place to see big cats of a different kind.

The Kamleshwar dam in the middle of the sanctuary is home to a record population of marsh crocodiles. A colourful array of birds can also be spotted.

The Maldharis
Gir is the home of the Maldharis, a term used for the many Hindu and Muslim pastoral groups of the area. The Maldhars live in traditional settlements called nesses and tend Jafrabadi buffalos, Gir cows and other livestock. Some of them also have camels, sheep and goats. Among the best-known pastoral groups of Gir is the Sorathi Rabari.

The Siddis
Siddis are a community tracing their ancestry to Africa. Believed to have come from African countries as mercenaries, slaves and labour, the Siddis grew to become powerful generals, some of them even became rulers.

Detailed Description
Bombay is the main international gateway to Lion Safari Camp. There are daily flights from Bombay to both Diu and Rajkot. The secondary international gateway to Gujarat is Ahmedabad which is a six hour drive from Sasan. You can also fly from Delhi or Bangalore to Ahmedabad and then drive down to Sasan.

Guests can also travel by train. There are various trains from Bombay to Rajkot and Veraval. There are also trains from Ahmedabad to Veraval and Junagadh.

From Rajkot
Get down at Rajkot Railway Station / Airport and take a Auto / Taxi to Limda chowk. From here a number of private buses will go to Junagadh at Regular intervals. Junagarh is 105 Kms from Rajkot and the bus Journey takes around two and a half hours.

Once you reach Junagadh, take an auto to the local bus stand. From here you have two options. You can either go by bus from gate no 10/11 to Sasan Gir which costs Rs 24/- or take a Taxi which is available from opposite the bus stand directly to your hotel in Sasan Gir. This journey of 55 kms takes around an hour and a half. The taxi will charge around Rs 400/- to Rs 500/- depending on your bargaining skill for the drop to Sasan Gir.

From Diu
As soon as you get down at Diu airport, take a taxi which is available outside and tell them that you want to go to Sasan Gir. Sasan gir is about 110 kms from Diu airport. If your flight comes to Diu after lunch, then it is better to halt at Diu [Radhika Resort-3 star] for the night or alternatively one can drive down to Somnath temple and halt there for the night at Safari hotel and resort [Very good value for money hotel]. The distance from Diu to Somnath is 75 kms and the road is good except in some patches. It takes around an hour to reach Somnath from Diu. Sasan Gir is around 45 kms from Somnath and takes around an hour and the road here is also good.

In order to process train bookings, details such as gender, age and nationality are required well in advance of travel. Guests need to book their own plane tickets through an international travel agent however Camps of India reservations office can help coordinate flights. All travel times and rates are subject to change without notice.
