Overview
The epic saga of Fernhills Palace dates back to 1844, when Captain F. Cotton of the Madras Engineers Regiment built the first 'Fernhill Bungalow'. As the years passed and its owner changed, Fernhills too changed its name and its usage. At one time it was Ooty's famous Club Hotel 'Moonisami' and some say that even today, in the midst of a still night, you can hear the Ballroom echo with the laughter of ladies, the excitement of bets won or lost, the piano's tinkling notes and the soft glide of dancing feet.

Even more fascinating is the story of a twelve-year old prince who had bought the then 40 acres of Fernhill property for Rs. 10,000. The year was 1873 and Fernhills had found a new, royal, owner. His Highness Chamarajendra Wadiyar X, the first Indian Royal to buy an English holding in Ooty. Since then Fernhills palace has been with the Wadiyar dynasty and today it continues in the capable hands of His Highness Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar.

Dining
  1. Restaurant - Curry & Rice: The restaurant has been designed to seduce and pamper the palate with a delightful fusion of western and Anglo Indian cuisine. As its name suggests, the restaurant 'Curry and Rice' draws its inspiration from George Francklin Atkinson's 'Curry and Rice on Forty Plates'. Published in London in 1859 it was a satirical work on the newly arrived British in India. It contained a title and 39-lithographed plates. These formed the model for the murals in the dining room and connecting passage specially commissioned by His Highness. In addition to the typical Anglo Indian cuisine, there are also highly secret recipes from the royal kitchen of the Wadiyar family. The restaurant has an award-winning chef who also specialises in Indian, Continental, Chinese and Nilgiri cuisine, as well as Health food.
  2. Private Dining: Retrace the stories of yesteryear, when elegant carriages came up the drive to the Palace, bearing visiting English governors and Indian princes. The sumptuous dinner, with delectable recipes of the Wadiyar family, is just the first course of a delightful evening, laced with humour, history and art.
  3. The Fox Hunt Bar: Explore history-laden Fernhills Palace and discover its much-acclaimed Fox Hunt Bar. Off one of the passages, decorated with family portraits, the bar can be found, panelled with red Mahogany from floor to ceiling, evocatively capturing a bygone era. Its warm, rich interior reflects the theme - Hunting. Its walls are hung with the accouterments of hunting; saddles, harness, hunting horns, prints and photographs - a vivid reminder of the Fox Hunting meets which began in 1894 and continue to be held every year, commemorating an era that celebrated this event with elegant pomp. It is the beginning of a unique experience. Sipping your vodka martini in a comfortable leather armchair before the fireplace, or settling into your own personal bar saddle-stool savouring your scotch and soda, you will be surrounded by the romance of the stories unfolding around you.
